Before you store passwords
Passwords are stored in plain text in the database; they are not encrypted. Anyone with access to the database, a backup or the server shell can read them, so encrypt your backups and keep your most critical secrets (database, root or banking passwords) in a dedicated password manager. The password field is not returned by normal reads, searches or exports, and only members of a vault can reveal or copy its passwords.
